touring Nova Scotia

Postby keloran » Tue Jul 14, 2009 11:18 pm

Hi there! My husband and I will be doing a trip to Nova Scotia (from Ontario) via Portland, Maine. We're doing (roughly) Yarmouth --> Lunenburg --> Halifax --> Cabot Trail --> back through NB to QC --> Gaspé --> back to Ontario. Is there anything I should avoid/be wary of? Someone told me that there was a stretch of road with very few gas stations, but that was about it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Markus: Many thanks for your info. I'll definitely put that to good use! I already have the guide that you've mentioned. In fact we booked a major portion of our accommodations with it. :D Our route actually takes us into Moncton on our way through NB so I'll see about doing a quick pitstop at Atlantic Motoplex.

Hey Kel,

Which way are you and Qualdoth taking through to Maine? I took Hwy 2 across from Montpelier (I'm going from memory here, so I might have the city wrong, but it was in the area. It was nice and quick, but not that twisty.

Make sure you get up early to hit the Cabot Trail since traffic is bad in the summer (which I'm sure Markus will agree with).

If you can, you should try to hook up with the eastcoast contingent of the DOCC. They are very welcoming and a great source of knowledge for local roads.

Have a great, safe trip.

Hi Ehren: Our plan is to boot it out of Toronto on Thursday afternoon/evening to about Gananoque, after which we will spend Friday going through the Adirondacks to Portland. I had a paranoid moment about time zone changes and missing the ferry the on Saturday morning, but we're all good since the time zone doesn't change until we arrive in NS. Whew!

Nice route. There is a nice photo op in front of Rumford Falls. The parking lot on the right just before a sharp left in the highway is a great vantage.

If anyone is interested, we've put together a little something here:

I'll post more photos on Flickr when we actually get home. ;)

Cheers!
