Vintage Ducati Restoration in BC?
cheers from brooklyn!
there is a guy locally selling this '66 Monza:
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/mcy/173838947.html
he told me that it was restored about 6 years ago by someone in British Columbia. do you guys know who that could be? i would maybe like to contact them.
i'm just starting to get into these bikes and am currently looking around for a project but was curious about your thoughts on this bike. it has been for sale for a while, at $7500USD! it sounds like he has a chrome (Silentium?) muffler that would come with it, but that the pipe on there 'sounds really nice'.
thanks!

Can't tell you who built the bike, maybe one of the western buddies knows. Judging from the pics, he did a nice job. It's not restored to original, which means it's not worth as much as an original excellant unrestored/restored.
On the up side, It's got some nice parts:
Veglia white face tach & tach drive
Alloy rims (Akront or Borrani?)
Rear-sets
clip-ons or clubman bars (can't tell which)
big carb
Solo seat (probably more comfortable than original)
Down side:
Square style body work
Re-spoked the wheels & didn't change the front brake
Questions to ask:
What, if anything was done to the engine. Was it rebuilt? To stock spec, Mach 1 spec, or higher? What cam, big or small valves, solid or screw & locknut rockers, what c.r. for the piston. Does it shift quickly, accurately and with a really short throw (indicates reshimmed box-good). What size carb? What does the engine sound like (good/loud are not the correct answers unless you know what to listen for).
Bottom line: $7500 US is a really high price for this bike. The owner may have that much into it, though. Unrestored originals of this model usually sell in the $2-4000 range, but a properly done stock engine rebuild is $3-3600. Guaranteed, if you did a total resto on a $500 junker and paid for the work, you'd end up with bills totalling $5-6000, possibly more.
Cheers, Rocket
