916 crank shaft
Ok funny story , I think the clutch is sorted as the push rod is still in one piece. BUT it only had like 10 laps befor the bike made a noise and quit .
SO can any one explain to me how the end of the crank shaft were the rotor and fly wheel are mounted can just up and BRAKE OFF ???

Re: 916 crank shaft
Ya I over rev it !
Typically i knock it down a gear befor the corner and let it rev up coming into it .make that compression work for me, then it is usually in its happy place for the drive out . perhaps i need to re evaluate this.
it sees 11k on a regular Base.as it is chipped i was told it could do 11k. again a re think is in order!

Re: 916 crank shaft
I don't think you are making any power up at
11. I would really think you want to keep it
In the fat part of the torque between 7/10.
Short shifting rather than over revving!
I have never seen or heard of it on a street bike
But the factory boys had broken a few in the early days
Hopefully it didn't do a lot of other damage!
Good luck with you repair!
Paul

Re: 916 crank shaft
okay ,motor out and cases are split !
Interesting thing ,this motor has gaskets ! case half's ,side case covers all have paper gaskets .
First one I have had apart with gaskets . so ?? do i put gaskets back in or just go with sealer ??

Re: 916 crank shaft
Rob, early motors used gaskets, just use sealer.
You will have to re shim all the transmission and crank
Best to replace all bearings, not real cheap. But worth it.
Make sure you get the new style head gaskets
All metal and thinner.
I have a bunch of shims if you need any.
I also have a lightened 916 crank in good shape,
If you need one.
You can order a top end gasket kit that has everything you need!
Have fun with the rebuild!

Re: 916 crank shaft
Dunlop has told you what has lead to your broken engine. Revs kill engines. The more revs you use, the shorter the life of the engine. Reving an eBay engine with an unknown pedigree to 11 grand on a regular basis is going to end up much like your story! Now if you have a carefully prepared engine built for track abuse then the life span would be longer but the cost of such an engine is very high - parts and labour.

Re: 916 crank shaft
Has any one ever done or tried the 900ss crank conversion to a 916 ??
If so , what is the easiest way to maintain the squish, find 2mm shorter rods ? and is there any Ducati rods that would directly fit in and do the job ? or is it corrillo's web site i need to be looking at ??
another option i am looking at is wiseco and having slugs made .
any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated!
thanx
