Here is an update on bill 177 from the office of MPP Dr. Helena Jaczek...

<received Jan 8, 2008>
In response to your question, Bill 117 is not yet a law. In order for a bill to become a law in the Ontario Legislature, it must pass three readings, and then be given Royal Assent.

Bill 117 passed second reading on December 4, 2008 and has been referred to the Standing Committee on Justice Policy. It has not yet been assigned a date to go before the committee. You are welcome to follow Bill 117 on the Ontario Legislature’s website, at www.ontla.on.ca.

This is the >14y/o law?

She's got a cut-paste reply to every message sent to her on the subject. All those I know who've sent emails to her regarding this bill have received the same reply.

The logic of this bill is just unfathomable. Instead of legislating against doing an action: why are they not legislating common sense? It's why we have seatbelts, airbags et.al in cars. Force parents (or the rider who is responsible for the child) to wear proper safety equipment instead? Full face helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and pants that all properly fit the passenger instead of a passing a blanket ban.
Argh. It's the stupid people who ruin everything.
