"Decibel Killers"

Postby alpharep » Tue May 11, 2010 11:53 pm

Have any of you used a "decibel killer" or some such exhaust baffle in your Duc? My '96 M900 has stock exhaust but I think someone removed the Cat and the baffles and it is really loud. I've had the bike for a year now but getting a bit tired of the noise (neighbors may be too!). Wondered if any of you had tried something like that and how it works? Does it cause a loss in power?

Decibel killers will restrict the flow of exhaust gasses and negatively affect your performance. How much depends on how quiet!

I think that given the age and unknown pedigree of your current exhaust that you should dirll out the endcap rivets and take a peak inside your mufflers. It could well be that your fibreglass packing is all gone. This is not uncommon and it is an easy and cheap fix - repack. Motorcycle shops carry the packing. The stranded packing is easier to install, the sheet packing lasts longer. Home Depot for the rivets and rivetting tool. Good luck.
