I am new to the Ducati world and would like feed back on recommended oil by manufacturer and weight for my new 999.

At the suggestion of Bruce Meyers{founder of BCM] I began using Klotz 20-50 synthetic after break in on my '91 907. At 28,000 miles the pistons were replaced as part of a 944 kit. The origional pistons were virtually brand new. I have used the Klotz exclusively since '91 and have had great results in the 907, 916, three 750SS a 510 Husky, a 610 Husky, and a 620 KTM. I guess I'm hooked. It smells delightful as well! Best wishes.

I use Royal Purple 20-50 in my 999 and it seems to work well. It doesn't however smell delightful but it is a pretty color!

Golden Spectro 20-50. Full synthetic for summer & semi for storing in the winter. It's what the dealer put in when I bought the bike new so I keep on using it. No fancy colour or smell though.

I am with Guy Pike. I have used Klotz for some time now, and have never seen an oil work so well. Talk to Bruce lately he also recomend Motorex 20-50 full synth. I have no experience with that oil though.

Doesn't Ducati recommend only 10W-40 Shell Advance Ultra 4?

However, my genuine Ducati Supersport 1000 service manual states: "use only a highly detergent engine oil with certified API SE, SF or SG, or even higher, service ratings (SAE 10W-40 viscosity)."

Never had a problem using Castrol Gran Prix 10W-40 motorcycle oil (about $3 per liter at MalWart) in my Japanese machines - claimed to exceed the API SG rating. Oil and filter changes at 4000 km intervals.

Due to necessity this past season I had to change the oil in my machine from it's long usage of Amsoil 10/40 to Mobil 1 10/40. Both being fully synthetic.

For the frst time ever I had to top up between very regular oil changes. Who would have thought it? I'm back on Amsoil.

I think it is a true saying, there are no bad oils out there these days, but I do believe there are enough differences between brands to make following some good advice worthwhile, or at the very least, indulging in some experimentation to find the best product for your particular machine.

I get my oil, filters and spark plugs at my local C.T.
