Stalling

I read the recent Cycle Canada and the ST3 that was in one of the articles had the same problem that I have on my 999. It wants to stall at take off. It runs fine and idles fine but in stop and go traffic it wants to stall at take off. I'm used to reving it up and feathering the clutch now but thats no garantee it won't stall everytime. I do start the bike first, then adjust fast idle at warm up (Read somewhere else if you choke first then start, computer will read fast idle condition as the normal condition and when bike warms up and choke push back in, it'll run lean and wants to stall. May be not my case?) Article says Steve Hicks adjusted the fuel mixture and it cured it. Isn't the mixture computer controlled? Could the 999 be adjusted? Anyone had similar problems?

I have had the same problem.. only when the engine temp climbs over 100.. if I am in heavy traffic it will choke a few times.. then if I am not careful it shuts off by itself. My mechanice told me it is a heat issue. The engine does not like to run hot... Who knows.

Yeah kind of. Doesn't have to be over 100 though. It does seems to happen only after it's been running for a while. It'll "pop" then stalls when U give it gas. I'm afraid though if I run it richer it'll prematurely clog up the cat? Do you run stock exhaust Marc?

I have changed my exhaust from the front all the way to the back.. but even with my stock one it would do the same thing. caugh.. hit the gas.. then it would die.. always as the light went green.

You should talk to Steve Hicks then. (I don't know his # but some one must on this forum.) I'm guessing you can run it richer then, since you got no cat to worry about.
This sounds kind of familiar.

Does everyone have a problem with these bikes in regards to stalling. Yesterday, I was out all day on the bike with no-problems. I stopped for gas (used premium) and then shortly after when I would really rev it, it was like it just stuck at 140km. I would twist the throttle more and it actually started to de-accelerate. I was thinking may be it was dirty gas but, after reading this posts I'm not sure. I did just change the exhaust to a termi. and added a power commander. The first year I had this bike it started doing this to the point of stalling and coming to a complete stop. Any ideas? Who is this Steve Hicks fellow, how do I get in touch with him.

I am not having the problem at speed.. only when in traffic and the engine gets hot does it tend to choke itself and stall. In your case I was thinking dirty gas as well.

My 2003 749s also suffered from this mysterious ailment until a service stop (at Terminal Velocity - Steve Hick's old dealership). I also had a computer that could not display the lap timer function and the computer was replaced.
The problem has never shown up since. I am not sure if this is attributed to the computer or some other tweak that Steve performed.
Unfortunately I cannot start a poll in this forum section to see what percentage of us 749/999 owners suffer(ed) from this.

Polling an Obvious ISSUE!

Why can't we poll this issue. Is some form of factory re-call in order. Did I just spend $25 000 and get rid of my perfectly fine zx-9r for a bike that overheats easily, stalls or loses power at high speeds. I thought this was suppose to be the Ferrari of motorcycles. All of my friends thought I was losing my mind to spend this kind of money. Did I?

I had that problem until Paul Lacelle put my exhaust on, now it is cured. Oh ya and Dean get off that fat wallet of yours and ALWAYS use premium. You're not on a ZX9 anymore!

Robert Trottier at RevCycle may have the answer.. Apparently it may be a small adjustment that has to be made... Hopefully he is following this thread and will be able to tell you what he told me.

There are two adjustments that can solve this problem. One is an electronic adjustment, the other is mechanical.
